Flood watch in effect today for Mid-Ohio Valley

PARKERSBURG — A flood watch will be in effect through mid-day today as more rain is expected to hit the area.

The National Weather Service issued the watch Wednesday afternoon, saying flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

The watch, which is expected to last until 2 p.m. today, covers portions of southeast Ohio, including the counties of Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington in Ohio and Barbour, Braxton, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Jackson, Lewis, Mason, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Taylor, Tyler, Upshur, Wirt and Wood in West Virginia.

“A potent, moisture-laden low pressure system will bring rain, heavy at times, Thursday morning,” the statement from the National Weather Service said. “Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts, are possible in the watch area.

“With soils already saturated from previous rainfall, flash flooding is a possibility.”

The area was hit by rain storms earlier this week with some areas where the ground still has a lot of moisture.

Today, showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected mainly before 3 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m., the weather service reported.

The high will be in the upper 70s. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch are possible in the Parkersburg area.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms will drop to 30% mainly before 8 p.m. today.

“Excessive run-off may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” the weather service said. “Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded.”

The forecast for the rest of the week is mostly sunny with a high near 84 on Friday and mostly sunny through the weekend with a 30% chance of showers after 3 p.m. Saturday with a high of 87 and 40% showers overnight before 4 a.m.

It is expected to be mostly sunny on Sunday with a high near 87.
