Two Wood County men facing sexual abuse charges

Robert M. Stump

PARKERSBURG — A Parkersburg man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of first-degree sexual abuse, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday.

In a separate case, deputies served a warrant Monday on a man indicted by a grand jury last week on numerous charges of sexual abuse, sexual assault and incest.

On April 22, deputies responded to Blennerhassett Elementary School on a report of sexual abuse of a 7-year-old female student, who disclosed the sexual abuse by Robert M. Stump, 24, Chateau Hills Court, having occurred at Chateau Hills Court in Parkersburg, the sheriff’s department said.

Immediately following the disclosure, the Wood County office of Child Protective Services in cooperation with the sheriff’s office took immediate action in assuring the victim and her infant sibling were placed in a safe environment while an investigation was initiated, the sheriff’s department said.

Stump was placed under arrest Tuesday at the Sheriff’s Office, arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court on the charge of sexual abuse first-degree and placed in the holding center pending a surety bond of $100,000, the sheriff’s office said.

Michael Dale Deem

The Children’s Listening Place, the West Virginia State Police Criminal Investigative Bureau and the Detective Bureau of the sheriff’s office participated in the investigation, the sheriff’s department said.

In the separate incident, Michael Dale Deem, 69, 2104 Lost Pavement Road, was arrested on Monday at his residence and served with a warrant for an indictment last week by the Wood County Grand Jury, the sheriff’s office said.

The grand jury indicted Deem on six counts of sexual abuse in the first degree between November 2008 and June 2021, eight counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian between November 2008 and June 2021, two counts of sexual assault in the first degree between November 2008 and April 2020 and two counts of incest between November 2008 and April 2020.

The investigation by the sheriff’s office began on June 6, 2021, the department said. The investigation was assisted by the Children’s Listening Place and the investigator of the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office.

Deem was placed in the Holding Center pending a $50,000 surety bond, the sheriff’s office said.
