Police: Parkersburg man arrested after fleeing in vehicle

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg Police arrested a man who was involved in a high speed pursuit Wednesday.

Police arrested Joshua Dean Sprague, 42, of Parkersburg.

According to the criminal complaint written by Officer A.M. Rickman, Sprague was spotted driving east on Camden Avenue near the intersection of Rayon Drive in a dark blue Pontiac Grand Am with Ohio registration.

The officer knew Sprague and knew that registration did not belong on the vehicle. The officer began following him and caught up to him at the intersection of Edgelawn Avenue and W.Va. 95 when Sprague began to enter Interstate 77.

The officer got behind him and turned on his lights to do a traffic stop before reaching the interstate. Sprague’s vehicle accelerated and the officer began pursuit. Sprague’s vehicle exceeded 120 mph while traveling north on I-77, according to the criminal complaint.

The officer observed the suspect throw a small silver object from the sunroof that almost hit him.

The vehicle exited the interstate at the U.S. 50 exit going around 80 mph, ran a red light which almost caused numerous accidents. Sprague then got on U.S. 50 heading west. He continued on U.S. 50 and exited at Seventh Street. He traveled west on Seventh Street and ran another red light at Seventh Street and Fairview Avenue and continued west on Seventh Street at speeds of over 80 mph.

Sprague lost control and struck a white SUV near the intersection of Seventh Street and 14th Street, ultimately sliding to a stop near the 13th Street intersection.

Sprague immediately exited the vehicle and began fleeing on foot south toward Bird Street.

Officers pursued and gave numerous loud verbal commands for the defendant to stop which were ignored.

The officer caught up to Sprague and tased him “which gained immediate compliance from the def(endant),” the criminal complaint said.

Sprague was taken into custody. Officers found a Ruger LCP .380 handgun approximately 10 yards from where he was arrested.

He was charged with fleeing in a vehicle, causing bodily injury, being a prohibited person with a firearm and a capias for obstruction and fleeing.

He was arraigned by Magistrate Robin Waters and held on $302,000 bond.
