Athens County man charged with involuntary manslaughter

ATHENS, Ohio — An Athens County man was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Sunday following an assault, Sheriff Rodney Smith said.

Justin Pennington, 35, of Guysville, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Smith said.

The sheriff’s department shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday was dispatched to 3449 Sargent Road in Shade where CPR was being administered to the victim, Blaine Sharpe, 59, of Shade, Smith said. Sharpe was taken to Ohio Health Hospital where he died because of injuries, Smith said.

Pennington walked to Sharpe’s daughter’s house immediately after the attack and told her he just assaulted her father, Smith said. Pennington then fled on foot, Smith said.

Deputies were told Pennington went to a large wooded area where a perimeter was established and a search began, Smith said.

“At approximately 9:30 p.m., Pennington was located and placed under arrest prior to being transported to the sheriff’s office for questioning,” Smith said. “Detectives received a confession by Pennington of the attack on Mr. Sharpe.”

Detectives spoke with the prosecutor’s office and Pennington was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony.

Assisting in the investigation were the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Athens City Police Department.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the sheriff’s office at 740-593-6633.
