Two Wood County residents among COVID-19 deaths

Two people from Wood County were among the 11 confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus reported on Tuesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

The state reported the deaths of an 82-year-old man and a 97-year-old woman from Wood County, raising the death total in the county to 166 people since the pandemic began in March 2020. Also confirmed on Tuesday were deaths from the virus in Raleigh, Wyoming, Nicholas, Barbour, Logan, Monroe, Cabell and Wayne counties, the youngest a 47-year-old man from Logan County, the state said.

The death toll since the pandemic started is 2,707 in West Virginia.

Current active cases of the virus in West Virginia were reported at 6,854 as of Tuesday. New cases in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday mornings were 277.

Active cases of the virus have increased since March 12 when about 5,100 cases were active.

Total hospitalizations are at 254 people with 80 in an intensive care unit and 17 on ventilators.

The state has fully vaccinated 355,892 people.

The number of residents fully vaccinated and percentage of population for other local counties: Calhoun, 1,155, 16.2; Doddridge, 2,353, 27.9; Gilmer, 1,402, 17.9; Jackson, 4,456, 15.6; Pleasants, 1,614, 21.6; Ritchie, 1,819, 19; Roane, 2,481, 18.1; Tyler, 1,604, 18.7; Wetzel, 3,590, 23.8; Wirt, 1,077, 18.5; Wood, 12,066, 14.4.

All West Virginians age 16 years and older are encouraged to pre-register for a COVID-19 vaccine through the Vaccine Registration System at www.vaccinate.wv.gov.

Vaccination clinics are scheduled in the region this week.
