Jackson County resident among COVID-19 deaths

CHARLESTON — A 95-year-old Jackson County woman was one of seven West Virginians whose COVID-19-related deaths were announced Thursday by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

The statewide death toll attributed to the coronavirus stood at 2,683 as of Thursday morning’s update from the DHHR. Other deaths announced Thursday ranged in age from a 97-year-old Ohio County woman to a 41-year-old man from Raleigh County.

“To honor the lives of these West Virginians who have passed, I ask that you please continue all prevention efforts against COVID-19,” DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “Our deepest sympathies are extended at this time of grief.”

Statewide there were 495 new cases reported from Wednesday to Thursday, up from 416 in the previous 24-hour period. There were 6,499 active cases in West Virginia.

Active case totals in local counties include: Calhoun, 4; Doddridge, 13; Gilmer, 3; Jackson, 65; Pleasants, 7; Ritchie, 8; Roane, 22; Tyler, 26; Wetzel, 96; Wirt, 6; Wood, 143.

DHHR says 323,067 West Virginians have been fully vaccinated, receiving both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna shots or one of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

The number of people fully vaccinated and percentage of population in local counties are: Calhoun, 1,126, 15.8; Doddridge, 2,085, 24.7; Gilmer, 1,342, 17.2; Jackson, 3,712, 13; Pleasants, 1,421, 19; Ritchie, 1,596, 16.7; Roane, 2,424, 17.7; Tyler, 1,512, 17.6; Wetzel, 3,291, 21.8; Wirt, 1,061, 18.2; Wood, 10,005, 12.

People can schedule appointments for vaccinations at upcoming events in Wood, Wirt and Pleasants counties online at uwamov.com/covid.

Those without Internet access can schedule an appointment by calling 304-420-1449 and leaving their name, date of birth and phone number if it goes to voicemail.

Residents 16 and older can register for a vaccination at vaccinate.wv.gov or by calling 1-833-734-0965 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Vaccination clinics scheduled for today:

* Gilmer County, 8:30 to 10 a.m., Sue Morris Sports Complex, Glenville.

* Jackson County, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jackson County Armory, 8832 Pt. Pleasant Road, Millwood.
