Jackson, Wood residents die of COVID-19

CHARLESTON — Three people from the region are among the deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus confirmed on Friday, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.

The state confirmed the deaths of two 87-year-old men from Jackson County and a 63-year-old man from Wood County. Another 12 people were confirmed as deaths from the virus in the 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday morning, raising the total of confirmed deaths to 2,248 since the pandemic began in March, according to the department.

Deaths also were confirmed in Jefferson, Mercer, Kanawha, Fayette, Berkeley, Wayne and Marion counties.

Active cases were at 9,624, the first time below 10,000 since Nov. 15, the state said. Active cases were at the highest on Jan. 10 at 29,257.

The number of new positive cases in the 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday was 295. The daily positivity rate was 3.12 percent and 5.52 percent cumulative. The daily rate has been the lowest since mid-October.

The state has fully vaccinated 154,798 people. Residents can register for a shot at vaccinate.wv.gov where a schedule of clinics also is posted.

Hospitalizations dropped to 293, the first time it was below 300 since November. Sixty-eight people were in an intensive care unit and 33 were on ventilators.
