Active COVID cases continue to drop in West Virginia

CHARLESTON — Active cases of the COVID-19 virus statewide have dropped nearly 450 in the 24-hour period from Tuesday to Wednesday morning, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.

Active cases totaled 10,522 as of Wednesday, a drop of 447, the department said in its Wednesday morning pandemic update. Active cases, with Wednesday’s count being the lowest since Nov. 16, peaked at 29,257 on Jan. 10.

New cases from Tuesday to Wednesday increased 289, the smallest increase in new positive test results since the third week of October. The daily positivity rate is 3.41 percent and the cumulative is 5.54 percent.

Nine confirmed deaths in the 24 hours from Tuesday to Wednesday mornings were reported by the department of residents from Mercer, Wyoming, Fayette, Taylor, Harrison, Greenbrier, Grant and Wayne counties. The count since the pandemic began was at 2,225 as of Wednesday.

The state has fully vaccinated 145,734 residents. Vaccination clinics are scheduled this week in most counties and residents can pre-register for a vaccination at vaccinate.wv.gov.

Going online Wednesday was a county-by-county breakdown of the number of dosages administered and by age group at the coronavirus general information chart at coronavirus.wv.gov.

Local counties by number of shots, percentage of county population and number of residents over 65 receiving a shot: Wood, 13,037, 15.6, 6,956; Wirt County, 994, 17.1 640; Wetzel, 3,189, 21.2, 1,966; Tyler, 1,332, 15.5, 758; Roane, 2,371, 17.3, 1,610; Ritchie, 1,582, 16.6, 1,002; Pleasants, 1,702, 22.8, 1,031; Jackson, 5,.744, 18, 2,792; Gilmer, 1,753, 22.4, 1,090; Doddridge, 2,040, 24.1, 1,248; Calhoun, 1,556, 22, 955. The most shots were in Kanawha County with 54,801 administered, or 30.8 percent of the population, and 26,596 people over age 65.

Hospitalizations were at 320, which has trended downward since the peak of 818 on Jan. 5. Seventy-four people are in an intensive care unit and 32 are on ventilators.
