Wood, Jackson residents among COVID-19 deaths

CHARLESTON — Two people from Wood and Jackson counties are among the confirmed deaths Tuesday from the virus, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

Statewide, another 29 deaths were confirmed from Monday to Tuesday, raising the count since the pandemic began in March to 1,928 people.

The two local confirmed deaths were a 78-year-old man from Jackson County and a 96-year-old woman from Wood County, the department reported in its Tuesday morning pandemic update. The state also reported the deaths of residents from Berkeley, Mingo, Kanawha, Mercer, Greenbrier, Raleigh, Fayette, Monongalia, Lincoln, Barbour, Ohio, Morgan and Taylor counties.

New positive cases increased 1,139 from Monday to Tuesday. The number of active cases was 24,175 on Tuesday with the daily percent positvity rate was 7.02 percent and the cumulative rate is 5.59 percent.

Of the 179,900 first doses received, 169,227 have been administered. The state has fully immunized 43,648 people. Residents 65 and older can register for vaccinations by appointment at vaccinate.wv.gov.

Hospitalizations totaled 582 people with 152 patients in intensive care units and 64 on ventilators.

Virus statistics for local counties as of Tuesday’s update were:

* Calhoun: 28 active cases, 176 recovered, 183 total confirmed, 21 total probable, 6,185 tests, 0 deaths.

* Doddridge: 71 active, 319 recovered, 295 total confirmed, 100 total probable, 5,197 tests, 5 deaths.

* Gilmer: 27 active, 526 recovered, 467 total confirmed, 92 total probable, 8,000 tests, 6 deaths.

* Jackson: 142 active, 1,373 recovered, 1,410 total confirmed, 150 total probable, 23,156 tests, 45 deaths.

* Pleasants: 60 active, 688 recovered, 638 total confirmed, 123 total probable, 6,517 tests, 13 deaths.

* Ritchie: 71 active, 460 recovered, 445 total confirmed, 94 total probable, 7,397 tests, 8 deaths.

* Roane: 57 active, 383 recovered, 406 total confirmed, 40 total probable, 12,913 tests, 6 deaths.

* Tyler: 115 active, 432 recovered, 359 total confirmed, 191 total probable, 6,899 tests, 3 deaths.

* Wetzel: 172 active, 783 recovered, 565 total confirmed, 408 total probable, 10,650 tests, 18 deaths.

* Wirt: 36 active, 283 recovered, 250 total confirmed, 70 total probable, 3,612 tests, 1 death.

* Wood: 531 active, 5,745 recovered, 4,808 total confirmed, 1,569 probable, 74,452 tests, 101 deaths.

In Wirt County, a free testing event will be held noon to 6 p.m. today at Matheny Funeral Home, 448 Juliana St., Elizabeth.
