W.Va.’s COVID-19 deaths top 1,800

CHARLESTON — Confirmed deaths from the virus have exceeded 1,800, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Tuesday.

An additional 31 deaths statewide were confirmed in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday, including three people from Wood and Wetzel counties, according to the department’s Tuesday morning update. The number of confirmed dead from the virus was 1,815 on Tuesday.

The local confirmed deaths were an 87-year-old woman from Wetzel County, a 72-year-old man and an 83-year-old man from Wood County. Confirmed deaths from Wood, Wirt, Jackson, Tyler, Wetzel, Calhoun, Doddridge, Roane, Ritchie and Pleasants counties total 182, with 46 of those since Jan. 11.

“Each tragic death reported is a solemn reminder of the seriousness of this disease,” department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “We send our sympathy to these families and urge all West Virginians to continue following the guidelines to protect one another.”

New cases of the virus increased 1,011 between Monday and Tuesday with 26,675 active cases. Hospitalizations total 638 with 162 in an intensive care unit and 85 on ventilators.

The state has fully vaccinated 24,181 people. Of the 132,700 first doses received, 132,192 have been administered. Of the 28,275 second doses received, 24,181 second doses have been administered.

∫ Jackson: 201 active, 1,259 recovered, 1,350 cumulative confirmed, 152 cumulative probable, 21,634 tests, 42 deaths.

∫ Pleasants: 62 active, 653 recovered, 615 cumulative confirmed, 111 cumulative probable, 6,159 tests, 11 deaths.

∫ Ritchie: 75 active, 418 recovered, 413 cumulative confirmed, 88 cumulative probable, 6,977 tests, 8 deaths.

∫ Roane: 69 active, 332 recovered, 369 cumulative confirmed, 38 cumulative probable, 12,398 tests, 6 deaths.

∫ Tyler: 137 active, 366 recovered, 328 cumulative confirmed, 178 cumulative probable, 6,443 tests, 3 deaths.

∫ Wetzel: 188 active, 699 recovered, 530 cumulative confirmed, 375 cumulative probable, 10,277 tests, 18 deaths.

∫ Wirt: 47 active, 253 recovered, 234 cumulative confirmed, 67 cumulative probable, 3,486 tests, 1 death.
