Football series moved to UC
The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission state football championships, which have been held at Wheeling Island Stadium since 1994, will return to Charleston for 2020 because of COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions.
Commission Executive Director Bernie Dolan announced Friday morning, because Ohio County remained in “orange” on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources COVID-19 County Alert System map, the event must move to a lower-risk county. Kanawha County was yellow, the second-lowest risk designation, on Friday’s alert map.
The games will be played at Laidley Field at University of Charleston Stadium and will remain on their normal schedule of one game Friday and two games on Saturday.
The event recently celebrated its 25th year at Wheeling Island Stadium and, in February, the commission signed a new four-year contract for the Super Six to remain at Wheeling Island Stadium.
