Coronavirus claims life of Kanawha County man

CHARLESTON — One person has been confirmed to have died from the COVID-19 virus since Wednesday morning, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Thursday morning.

The state reported the death of a 78-year-old man from Kanawha County in the 24-hour period since Wednesday. The number of deaths in West Virginia from the virus was 370 as of Thursday morning.

“As many of us have grown tired of COVID-19, it is more important than ever to stay vigilant in our prevention efforts,” Health and Human Resources Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.

To date, there have been 609,111 total confirmatory laboratory results received for the virus with 17,325 positives, an increase of 186 in the 24-hour period from Wednesday, the department said.

Current active cases were at 4,256 as of Thursday morning with 168 patients in the hospital, 59 in intensive care units and 29 on ventilators.

Cases for local counties reported on Thursday: Calhoun (29), Doddridge (39), Gilmer (50), Jackson (306), Pleasants (20), Ritchie (16), Roane (61), Tyler (18), Wirt (15) and Wood (396).

Free COVID-19 testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the South Parkersburg Baptist Church, 1655 Blizzard Drive, through the state and the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department. Testing is available to all residents in Wood County and proof of insurance is not required, however, people are asked to bring identification, such as a driver’s license or other proof of address, and those younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
