PARKERSBURG — An early-morning fire Friday destroyed a house on Seventh Street and forced the closure of several blocks of road.

The fire broke out at around 7:30 a.m. in a home at 1851 Seventh St. at the corner of Celia and Seventh streets. Early reports indicated no one was in the house at the time of the fire, but at least one person was taken from the scene by ambulance.

The fire burned for more than an hour, with authorities closing several blocks of Seventh Street and plumes of smoke billowing throughout the neighborhood. The road was reopened around 10 a.m.

The top levels of the home were fully engulfed, and firefighters had to briefly retreat from the house as the fire dislodged roof slates which fell down into the yard, according to scanner chatter Friday morning. Portions of the roof also collapsed.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and additional details have not yet been made available.
