Whipple man indicted for involuntary manslaughter

MARIETTA – A Whipple man is the second person to be prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter for allegedly providing illegal drugs.

Darin M. Craig, 29, of 615 Dalzell Road, was indicted by the Washington County Grand Jury for involuntary manslaughter, corrupting another with drugs, complicity to trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound, complicity to trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound and obstructing official business.

He is accused of providing the heroin linked to the death of Samantha D. Seevers, 24, of Marietta. Seevers was found with a needle in her arm behind the Seventh Street Speedway in Marietta on Sept. 18.

Marietta Police said they obtained cell phone messages confirming a meeting between Seevers and Craig to purchase heroin. The grand jury noted the Samsung cell phone used was subject to forfeiture.

Craig’s original bond was set at $250,000 by the Marietta Municipal Court. The Washington County Common Pleas Court lowered it to a $50,000 personal recognizance bond.

According to Marietta Municipal Court records, Craig has been in contact with local law enforcement several times before and has been charged with domestic violence as well as several drug violations, including possesion of drug instruments and drug paraphernalia this month. That case remains pending.

The first time a Washington County resident has been prosecuted on involuntary manslaughter charges related to the death of a person who had purchased drugs was in 2016, Assistant Prosecutor Joe Derkin said.

Ryan Vogt, who was 29 when he was charged with involuntary manslaughter for selling Tyler Miller the heroin that resulted in his death, began serving a six-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter in 2018.
