Read Aloud West Virginia seeks readers

From staff reports

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Chapter of Read Aloud West Virginia is looking for volunteer readers.

Read Aloud West Virginia implements four research-based programs designed to motivate kids to read and encourage families to read to their children starting at birth.

In one of Read Aloud’s most popular programs, volunteer readers visit classrooms and other locations in the community to read to children on a regular basis. When schools are enrolled, they participate in the volunteer reader program and have access to Read Aloud’s other programs and resources.

Eight Wood County schools are currently enrolled in Read Aloud this school year, up from five the previous school year. They are: Criss, Emerson, Greenmont, Jefferson, Lubeck, Madison, Neale and Waverly.

“When volunteers go into the schools, they become role models who share stories that stimulate imagination, enrich vocabulary, build listening skills, and whet an appetite for a love of reading,” Read Aloud Executive Director Mary Kay Bond said.

To become a certified Read Aloud reader, volunteers are asked to attend a one-time orientation session.

The orientation provides information on Read Aloud’s programs, background and mission.

Volunteers are also educated about classroom expectations and given tips on book selection.

Two reader orientations will be offered, 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wood County Board of Education Office.

Registration is not mandatory, but it assists the organization in planning.

Register at tinyurl.com/ReadAloudWV or by calling Ashlee Beatty at the Wood County Schools Board of Education 1-304-420-9670 ext. 112.
