Fatal motorcycle crash focus of investigation in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG — Criminal charges are pending in the death of a woman following a motorcycle crash last week.

Melissa Barone, 37, of Parkersburg, was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by her husband, 36-year-old Jason Barone, which was traveling south in the 900 block of Division Street around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said. A vehicle pulled into their path, causing Jason Barone to lay down the motorcycle, Martin said.

Melissa Barone was thrown from the vehicle and sustained injuries that led to her being pronounced dead at the scene, Martin said.

Jason Barone was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center and has since been released, the chief said.

Both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, Martin said.

“If he hadn’t been speeding, this crash probably never would have happened,” he said.

Investigation showed the motorcycle was traveling faster than the posted 40 mph speed limit, he said. Martin declined to reveal the driver’s blood-alcohol level, noting the case is still under investigation by the Police Department, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department’s Crash Team and the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office.

A decision on charges will be made at the conclusion of the investigation, Martin said.
