Parkersburg to host 26th Annual Homecoming Chess Tournament

PARKERSBURG – The 26th Annual Parkersburg Chess Tournament will be held Sunday at the Blennerhasset Hotel, part of the Parkersburg Homecoming activities.

The Chess Tournament has 2 sections:

∫ The rated section is for players who are members or who join the U.S. Chess Federation. All players play 4 games. Players use a chess clock and each have 60 minutes for the game. Registration is from 9-9:45 a.m. Games are scheduled for 10 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5:15 p.m. After the tournament, the results of the games are reported to the federation and the players will receive new ratings. The entry fee for the rated section is $20 if postmarked by July 12 or $25 at the site. A trophy will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place. In addition, there is a trophy to the player who posts the greatest upset.

∫ The non-rated Section is for players who have not played in a rated tournament in the past. It is intended to provide people, who know how to play chess, with the opportunity to experience playing in a chess tournament. This may be especially of interest to high school and elementary school players. Each player will play four games. Registration is from9-9:45 a.m. and the first game is at 10 a.m. The remaining three games will be scheduled to begin following the completion of the first games. The games in this section usually finish faster than the rated section. The entry fee for the non-rated section is $10 which should be paid at registration. A trophy will be awarded to 1st place. Players should bring a chess set.

“The non-rated tournament is very unique,” said event coordinator Patrick Kelly. “There are very few of them, so it is a good opportunity for the community. Our goal is to get local players from the schools or, like one year we had several from the (Parkersburg) Boys and Girls Club, to enter the non-rated section.”

This information also is posted on the Parkersburg Homecoming website along with the entry form. Entry forms also will be available at the registration table of the chess tournament.
