Belpre after-school program looks for students
BELPRE — Officials say an after-school learning program in Belpre through the Washington County Boys and Girls Club still has space available for interested families.
Executive Director Rebecca Johnson spoke Monday to the Belpre Board of Education concerning the program for Belpre Elementary School students in grades K-6.
The program, which will begin this coming Monday at the Belpre Church of the Nazarene on Putnam Howe Drive in Belpre, will serve up to 30 students, providing after-school tutoring and enhancement programs.
“We wanted to start small and more manageable,” she said.
So far eight students have registered to participate, Johnson said. Belpre City Schools will provide transportation from the school to the program, she said.
The program will run from the time students are dropped off until 6 p.m., though participation is based on the student needs and family schedules.
The program costs $3 a day, though scholarships are available, she said.
Johnson said the Washington County Boys and Girls Club mainly operates programs at its Marietta location, and serves students from Marietta City Schools, Warren Local Schools and Williamstown schools.
“We’re a community learning center, and we focus on academic and citizenship development of youths,” she said.
The partnership with Belpre City Schools and the Belpre Church of the Nazarene will allow for the club to reach more children, and Johnson said she hopes to see the Belpre program expand in the coming years.
