Vienna VFD Ice Cream Social fills Spencer Park
VIENNA — Hundreds of people gathered in Spencer Park on Friday evening for the 78th annual Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Ice Cream Social.
Along with ice cream, the social featured cakes, pies, cookies, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, pop, water, games for the kids and hot dogs provided by the Ladies Auxiliary along with entertainment by Plan B.
Tawnya Delancey, of Vienna, and her two children were among the hundreds attending Friday’s social. Delancey said she was born and raised in Vienna and has been attending the event all of her life.
“The kids love it. It’s great for families,” she said.
Fire Chief Steve Scholl said the social is the only fundraiser conducted by the department each year. It also serves as a community homecoming for many of the visitors and a way for the department to thank the community for its support, he said.
“These funds mainly go to our unfunded mandates; things we don’t get money for from the city or the county,” Scholl said, citing food and refreshments provided to firefighters working on long calls as one example of what the social supports.
“It’s very important, not only to the department but to the city,” he said of the social. “The citizens support us greatly and this is homecoming for them so everyone’s happy.”
Scholl said the department’s tower truck was recently refurbished using city funds, which will extend its working life for 15-20 more years. No other projects have recently been completed or are on the immediate horizon, he said.
“We don’t have any other major plans this year. We’re just trying to get everything else taken care of and stay steady,” he said.
