Kiwanis of North Parkersburg honors students with scholarships

PARKERSBURG — Scholarship winners from Parkersburg High School and Parkersburg South High School Key Clubs were recognized at a recent meeting of Kiwanis of North Parkersburg.

Receiving the Alice and Jack Meyers Scholarship at Parkersburg South is Faith Adebulu, who will attend Case Western University.

Bairavi Sundarham of Parkersburg High was presented the Joe Johnston scholarship. He will attend George Washington University.

Both winners were active in the Key Club at their school. The scholarships are managed for North Parkersburg Kiwanis Club by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.

Kiwanis President Patty Miser presented a check from fundraisers to the foundation to be added to the Kiwanis Fund. All former Key Club members and Kiwanians are encouraged to donate to the fund in honor of their service to their respective clubs.

The club also reported five Key Club members from Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South will be attending the International Convention in July in Baltimore and funds have been donated to assist them. A garage sale will be held July 6 to raise additional funds for this project.

The club reported on projects completed recently: WVSSAC Softball Tournament, Key Club Awards and Installation dinner, Terriffic Kid Awards at Neale, Emerson and McKinley schools.

Officers were elected for the upcoming year: Patty Miser, President, Ron Nichols, President-elect, Jonelle Merritt and Jean Lawrence, co-secretaries, and Brenda McGinnis, treasurer.

Kiwanis will be celebrating its 100th year this year at the District State Convention to be held at Oglebay Park in August. All members are encouraged to attend this celebration.

Congratulations was extended to the Downtown Kiwanis Club on their 100th anniversary with celebrations to be held later this summer.

North Parkersburg meets every second and fourth Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Shoney’s on Garfield. Anyone interested in community service is invited to attend or call 304-295-5655 for more information.
