Belpre Board of Education to vote on staff reductions
BELPRE — The Belpre Board of Education will meet Monday to discuss and vote on reducing or eliminating more than a half-dozen positions as part of a district-wide reduction in force.
The board will meet at 5 p.m. at the Stone Administration/Early Learning Center at 2014 Rockland Ave. in Belpre. The meeting is open to the public.
Last week officials announced the board would consider a reduction of eight positions, including the district’s school nurse, during the Monday meeting.
A statement issued May 10 through the district’s Facebook page said in addition to administrative benefits cuts, the positions affected would include: director of curriculum, which would be reduced to a 100 day contract; one assistant principal; a district psychologist with one psychologist remaining on staff; school district nurse; two custodians; one intervention specialist position; and one paraprofessional aide position through attrition.
In 2018, Belpre voters approved an emergency levy to keep the school system running for the next three years, but officials say due to cuts in funding at the state level and increased costs in utilities, insurance and other areas, the school system will again face a deficit in the near future.
Superintendent Jeff Greenley said he will present information on the eight reduction-in-force positions Monday. A ninth position has been affected by a non-renewal but is not considered part of the RIF, he said.
Those items will be brought to the board for action Monday as well, Greenley said.
Officials also plan to discuss district finances, including proposed and planned changes in state funding.
