Mid-Ohio Valley Atheists and Humanists hosts benefit concert

PARKERSBURG — The Mid-Ohio Valley Atheists and Humanists on April 13 hosted a benefit concert at DM’s Pizza Shop in Parkersburg to benefit Parkersburg Urban Ministries, a food pantry and personal hygiene goods provider housed in St. Paul United Methodist Church on Market Street.

The benefit provided Urban Ministries with $431, including direct donations, funds from a 50/50 raffle that the winner donated in full, 20 percent of the proceeds from sales made by DM’s Pizza Shop that evening and a large box of non-perishable foods and other items.

David and Kelta Peck, Carol and Steven Peck and Marcus “Doc” Mooney performed for the benefit, playing songs ranging from tunes the artists wrote themselves to Emmylou Harris and Lady Gaga.

“It was an honor to be present and to cohost the benefit concert fundraiser for Urban Ministries food pantry,” Atheists and Humanists President Anthony Underwood said. “Seeing people of goodwill and good intent come together for the right cause and share a meal and good songs was an example of what we can all do together when we choose to focus on what we share, and not what separates us.”

The evening was delightful, the Rev. Shauna Hyde of Parkersburg Urban Ministries said.

“Parkersburg Urban Ministries is deeply grateful when community members step up to help the community,” she said. “We are honored that MOVAH wanted to help support our work.”

Kelta Peck, who also is a board member and community committee chair of the Atheists and Humanists, organized the event with the help of her family, who owns DM’s Pizza.

“I was very pleased with all of the support from the community,” Peck said. “We raised a lot of money for a great cause and everyone had a good time.”
