PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg Fire Department was busy Wednesday morning with four fires in about three hours.

The fires occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 5:15 a.m., Fire Chief Jason Matthews said. No injuries were reported, he said.

The first was reported at 2:30 a.m. at 613 Lulu St. where seven people escaped following a fire in the attic, he said.

The second was reported at 1314 Spring St. about two hours later. Matthews said damage was minor and the fire was reported to have started by a candle.

Matthews said the third and fourth fires began in buildings believed to be vacant.

Shortly after 5 a.m., firefighters were called to extinguish fires at a two-story garage apartment at 1705¢ St. Marys Ave. and at a home at 901 19th St.

“The buildings were said to be unoccupied but there were definitely people squatting there,” Matthews said. “We’re still working on reports and trying to locate some of the people thought to be staying there before we make a determination of what did happen.

“We were cleared of the scenes by 7 a.m.,” he said. “Lulu Street is still being investigated as well so there is still work to be done.”
