Wood County GOP nominates 3 to finish Deem’s term

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Republican Executive Committee today nominated former Delegate Tom Azinger and Parkersburg residents Matthew Dodrill and Edward Staats to complete the House term of the late Frank Deem.

Deem passed away Oct. 10 after having served in the West Virginia House or Senate in every decade since the 1950s. Azinger was appointed to the general election ballot for House District 10 in Deem’s place, but Gov. Jim Justice must appoint someone to finish out his current term in office.

“We still mourn the loss of Delegate Deem, but know that the future is in great hands from the quality of applicants we received for this opportunity to serve Wood County this term,” Wood County GOP Chairman Rob Cornelius said in a release announcing the appointments.

Azinger served 10 terms in the House, while Dodrill has twice run for a 10th District seat, including in this year’s primary. Staats ran for Wood County Commission in the 2016 primary.

Justice has up to five days to make an appointment to the vacancy from the list of nominees, Cornelius said.
