Police investigating death in Parkersburg auto accident

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg Police are investigating the death of a Coolville man early Thursday afternoon following an automobile accident.

Lt. Greg Nangle said police were dispatched to the Golden Corral parking lot on Garfield Avenue at 12:17 p.m. Thursday after a parked vehicle was struck by a vehicle, which pulled onto the lot from Garfield Avenue. That vehicle was driven by Joshua Edward Gibbs, 36, of Coolville.

Those who reported the accident found Gibbs unresponsive and not breathing behind the wheel of his vehicle. A responding officer performed CPR until emergency crews arrived and Gibbs was transported to Camden Clark Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at the hospital, Nangle said.

Nangle said the cause of death is undetermined but believed to be medical in nature. Gibbs was traveling south on Garfield Avenue when he is believed to have experienced a medical issue and went off the street into the parking lot, either intentionally or by accident, he said.

Gibbs was sent to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine cause of death, Nangle said.
