VIENNA — A medical issue is believed to be the cause of death for a man whose vehicle ran off of Rosemar Road and struck a tree Monday afternoon.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene across from 1101 Rosemar Road, Vienna, around 2:10 p.m. after the driver of a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee lost control of his vehicle and went off the road, Vienna Police Sgt. Scott Hughes said.

Police were not releasing the name of the deceased Monday afternoon pending notification of next of kin. The individual was from outside the area and the family had not yet been notified, Hughes said.

A Wood County Sheriff’s deputy and personnel from the first ambulance to reach the scene attempted CPR, Hughes said. The man was taken to Camden Clark Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“(It) actually appears to be a medical-related incident that caused the accident,” Hughes said.

A witness saw the Jeep stop in the middle of the road, the officer said. When someone approached the vehicle, it suddenly started moving again and went off the road.

“Whatever medical incident he was having, he was having in the middle of the roadway, and he took off again and crashed,” Hughes said.

Traffic on the road was reduced to one lane as police, firefighters and medics worked at the scene.

A second accident happened when the driver of one of the vehicles waiting to go through attempted to turn onto Orchard Avenue, Hughes said.

Driver Joshua Hall, 36, of Parkersburg, “failed to notice that an ambulance was trying to pass him on the left side,” he said.

Hall’s 2011 Hyundai Sonata struck a St. Joseph’s Ambulance Service ambulance driven by Jason Wilson, 36, of Sandyville. Neither driver was injured, nor was the 1-year-old child in Hall’s vehicle or the other two personnel in the ambulance, Hughes said.

Hall’s vehicle had to be towed from the scene, while the ambulance sustained minor damage, Hughes said.

That crash remains under investigation, he said.

The road was completely blocked for a while as wreckers removed the Sonata and Grand Cherokee.
