First Lutheran Church in Parkersburg slates candelight services

PARKERSBURG — Traditional Candlelight Christmas Eve services are scheduled today at First Lutheran Church, 19th and Plum streets.

The early service begins at 5:30 p.m. with music beginning at 5:15 p.m. The late service begins at 11 p.m. with music beginning at 10:30 p.m.

Both services feature the Festival Choir with director Mike Lockney. Guest vocalists are joining the Festival Choir for the services. First Lutheran organist Sherry Fosselmen is featured.

The Eastlawn Brass Quintet will perform and be joined by Alec Smith on saxophone, Colin Joy and Kyler Bandy on trumpet, percussionists Jacob and Travis Hunt, Elizabeth Martin and Cindy Lockney on clarinet, Becky Richardson and Amanda Butler on flute and Paul Smith and Scott Fauley on guitar.

A duet, “Christ Child’s Lullaby,” will be presented by Susan Smith and Paul Freeman.

Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services.

As is tradition, red and white poinsettias given in honor and remembrance of members, friends and relatives will decorate the church. Worshippers will be surrounded by candlelight and seasonal greenery.

Candles will be given to worshippers to join in the traditional lighting of candles during the singing of “Silent Night,” which traditionally ends each service.

The services are open to the public.

First Lutheran Church is handicapped accessible and has hearing assistance through the LOOP system. A nursery is available during the early service.
