Injury not stopping Lamp from walking

PARKERSBURG – Even a serious injury wasn’t going to stop Steve Lamp of Parkersburg from walking in the Parkersburg News & Sentinel’s Two-Mile race on Saturday.

Lamp is an active person, who loves to run and ran in the Parkersburg News & Sentinel’s 2014 Half Marathon for the first time. He has also run in 5K races.

Lamp was in a motorcycle accident on April 9 in Parkersburg in which he lost his left leg below the knee. He stayed active afterward and participated in a race with his wheelchair and crutches.

Lamp, 57, was cleared by his doctor on Aug. 7 to get a prosthetic leg. His residual limb was healed and he was ready to be fit, but there was only one week before the half marathon and two-mile races.

Lamp’s goal was to walk in the Parkersburg News & Sentinel’s Two-Mile race with his new leg. Before the accident, he planned to run in the Half Marathon.

Lamp was measured for his first artificial limb on Aug. 10 at Miller Prosthetics & Orthotics. He tried out the leg on Wednesday, and it was adjusted and a temporary setup was completed on Thursday. His initial steps on his new leg were described as amazing.

Mark Miller, of Miller Prosthetics & Orthotics, said he would walk with Lamp in the Two-Mile race, and make any adjustments along the way if needed.

At the race, Lamp was supported by 14 family members who also walked with him, including his wife, Martha, sisters-in-law and a niece who ran the Half Marathon. Lamp walked at a great pace, and only stopped once to make a quick adjustment. Miller walked with him in the race.

Lamp finished the Two-Mile race in a time of 41 minutes and one second. His goal is to run the Half Marathon next year.

Friends and family of Lamp are hosting two events this Saturday to help pay for his prosthetic leg. A 5K Walk/Run will be held in Parkersburg and later that day a motorcycle Dice Ride will take place.

The 5K will depart from Point Park at 8 a.m. and the Dice Ride will depart between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the Moose Lodge in Parkersburg.
