Garage door opener recalled over fire risk
PARKERSBURG -Dozens of models of Genie garage door openers were recalled due to overheating issues that can pose fire dangers, a local fire official said.
The Genie garage door opener recall may affect local residents and poses a fire hazard to any home it is installed in, said Parkersburg Fire Chief Eric Taylor.
A recall notice was issued on Feb. 24 by the Genie Co. that said the affected openers have a relay in the light control circuit of the control board that can fail, cause the relay to overheat and potentially catch fire.
According to the recall notice, there have been four confirmed reports of the control board on these units overheating, but no injuries have been reported. The units involved in the recall are approximately two years old, the notice said.
About 10,000 of these units are in America and 8,000 in Canada, the notice said. They were sold for about $250 from August 2011 through October 2012 at Lowe’s, the Home Depot, Carter Lumber, Menards, and Canadian Tire outlets, the notice said.
According to the recall notice, anyone who owns a Genie model PowerMax 1200 or 1500, or a Genie Pro TriloG 1200 or 1500, should immediately unplug the units and contact Genie for a repair kit.
The Genie company name and the model name should appear on the sides of the screw-operated openers, the notice said. The serial numbers for these units should be listed on a label located on the side of the unit opposite to the light, the notice said.
The non-pro recalled units will begin with one of the following five-number sequences: 11214-15, 11235, 11256, 11298, 11311-13, 11326-27, 11332, 11336-38, 12006, 12009, 12018-19, 12026-27, 12034, 12036-38 and 12058.
The Pro units being recalled will start with these five-number sequences: 11214, 11313, 11332, 11336 and 11347-49.
These units can be easily repaired with the materials provided by Genie once the unit has been reported to the company, the notice said.
Genie encourages people not to attempt repairing the units without the certified Genie repair kit and instructional booklet, the notice said.
It will take four days for the unit repair kit to arrive, the Genie company said.
The cost of the repair panel is free, and can be obtained by calling Genie at (800) 488-9918 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at geniecompany.com and click on “Recall Information.”
