BELPRE — The fifth annual Washington County Snack and Field Day for students with disabilities and special needs will be hosted from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today by Belpre High School.

The event will involve more than 300 student participants and volunteers from schools in Washington County and the newly added New Story Schools from Albany, event coordinator Haley Bonar, an assistant principal at Belpre High School, said. Also participating are schools from Fort Frye, Waterford, Warren, Marietta and Ewing School in Marietta, she said.

“This is the biggest one yet,” Bonar said.

Snack and Field Day provides a fun, engaging and appropriate field day experience for some students who otherwise would not participate because of their disabilities and needs, she said. The more than 40 activities include face painting, hula hoops, running, ring tosses and other events intended to be more game-like and fun than a competition, she said.

“It’s adaptive field day events made for children with disabilities,” Bonar said.

The field day is hosted by a different school system each year, she said.

Snack and Field Day is run by staff, students and residents of the community.

Activities will be held at the track and field, courtyard, gym and practice field, but most will be held at the track, Bonar said.
