Two Mid-Ohio Valley schools closed Thursday due to heat, power issues
MINERAL WELLS — Two area schools were closed Thursday — one without power, the other without heat.
Mineral Wells Elementary School was left without electricity after a truck delivering soft drinks to the 7-Eleven across Elizabeth Pike caught low-hanging lines and snapped a power pole, according to Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard.
The accident happened around 5 a.m. Thursday, Woodyard said.
The resulting outage initially affected 1,600 MonPower customers in the area, Will Boye, a representative for the company, said.
Electricity was restored for most of them earlier Thursday, but 366 remained without service into the afternoon, Boye said. They were expected to get power back around 3 p.m.
Poles and lines were replaced and a new transformer installed and school will be open today, said Kaleb Lawrence, assistant superintendent of operations for Wood County Schools.
Washington Elementary School announced on its Facebook page Thursday morning that it would be closed because its heat was out.
Marietta City Schools’ maintenance team assessed the heating system at Washington, corrected the issue and restored the heat on Thursday, according to Marietta City Schools Communications Coordinator Christian Hudspeth.
“The damage was likely due to an electrical short during the inclement weather (Wednesday night),” Hudspeth said in an email.
The school will reopen today, Hudspeth said.
The district is thankful for the quick work of the maintenance staff in fixing the heating issue, according to Hudspeth, and for limiting the amount of time the school was without heat.
“Parents have been informed of this update by text message, our website and a social media post,” Hudspeth said.
