MARIETTA — Organizers of this year’s Christmas Day Feast at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Harmar were planning to serve a record-breaking 900-plus meals this year.
They wound up around 1,100.
“Our reservations were way above planned numbers, and we had many last minute calls and walk-ins,” said Bruce Haas, who founded the event in 2014 with three fellow Christians who met for a weekly prayer-and-share time. “We spent five days prior rounding up extra food and more volunteers.”
Volunteers worked Christmas Eve to peel potatoes, cut pies and pack fruit. Others arrived at 9 a.m. Christmas morning to prepare meals for delivery while others stayed after to help with cleanup.
More than 100 volunteers made the event — which included dine-in, carry-out and delivered meals — happen, Haas said.
