PARKERSBURG — The Guild Builders youth theater group Friday will open “Disney’s Descendants: The Musical” at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg.

All nine shows through Jan. 28 are sold out. An extra scheduled performance also sold out.

Guild Builders through the Actors Guild of Parkersburg is a youth program for students in grades 4-12. Under the leadership of adult volunteers, the students act, run lights, build sets and handle many other tasks in the productions.

Doug Parks, in his fifth year with the Guild Builders program, is directing the show.

“The best part of the program is the kids,” he said. “I enjoy watching them grow throughout the show, and seeing them as they come back each year.”

“Disney’s Descendants: The Musical” features the teenage children of famed Disney villains, Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella De Vil.

Imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost, the teens have never ventured off the island until now when the four troublemakers are sent to attend prep school alongside the children of beloved Disney heroes. They have a difficult choice to make, to follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or be good.

“My favorite thing about the show is that it’s the kids of the characters that I grew up with and that it reinvents their stories,” Parks said. “The music rates at the top too. It’s hard not to dance and sing along with this show.”

Ali Evans, a freshman at Parkersburg South High School, plays Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen. She is in her fifth Guild Builders production and said the audience will love the music.

“After every rehearsal I’m always riding home singing a song or two that we did that night,” she said.

Evans is enjoying playing Evie.

“I get to have so much attitude and sass, and I get to act like these great people are my best friends,” she said.

Guild Builders members all point to the friendships they’ve made as the highlight of working on a show.

“The guild feels like one big family, and being a part of it is one of the best things that has ever happened to me,” said Eisley Adams-Morrison, an 8th grader at Edison Middle School who plays Mal, Maleficent’s daughter.

“I’ve made some of my best friends because of Guild Builders,” Adams-Morrison said. “The guild feels like another home to me.”

It’s been a challenge to bring the character to life, Adams-Morrison said.

“Mal is a fun character to play because she has depth. Her character has so many layers, and you can see her character develop throughout the show,” Adams-Morrison said. “She also has lots of fun lines. I love her sarcasm.”

Parks praised the production team that has been working with the youth on the show.

“We have a great creative team that has come together to create an amazing show,” he said. “It’s great working with so many people who have the best interest in the future of the Actors Guild in giving of their time for the Guild Builders program.”
