Wood County Library opening History Scavenger Hunts at courthouse

PARKERSBURG — The Genealogy Department at the Parkersburg & Wood County Public Library will hold its semi-annual History Scavenger Hunt from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 20 and 21 at the Wood County Courthouse.

The library held its first Fall 2020 History Scavenger Hunt in October 2020 at Historic Henderson Hall.

“Everyone had a great time and were absolutely amazed at what the Henderson Family provided for future generations to discover about the history of Wood County,” said Robin Yarzab, genealogist at the library. “This past spring we partnered with the Wood County Historical and Preservation Society to hold our Spring 2021 History Scavenger Hunt at the Phelps-Tavenner House. People appreciate the scavenger hunts as they are a fun adventure in learning about the history of Wood County.”

The library for this fall partnered with the Wood County Commission to focus on the courthouse. The courthouse at 1 Court Square is the fifth structure.

“Of course, we know from our previous scavenger hunt that the Phelps-Tavenner House functioned as the first courthouse of Wood County in the late 1700s. Artifacts from the previous structures are displayed on the walls and floors of the current courthouse,” she said. “Find out what these artifacts are and what they tell you about the history of your courthouse and Wood County.”

Wood County is rich in history, Jim Miracle, manager of the Genealogy Department at the library, said.

“And the Genealogy Department at the library and the Wood County Courthouse have great resources on historical and genealogical information for further learning and research,” Miracle said. “Our history-related scavenger hunts are an excellent family-oriented event that are a fun way to learn about where we came from and the importance of preserving our past.”

Calling the hunt a perfect lunchtime adventure, a prize will be awarded to the top winner of the scavenger hunt and all participants will receive a certificate. For more information call the Parkersburg & Wood County Public Library at 304-420-4587.
