Mid-Ohio Valley communities prepare for trick or treating

PARKERSBURG — With federal health officials recently giving the go-ahead for trick or treating, Mid-Ohio Valley communities are preparing for costumed kids to roam their neighborhoods.

Most cities, villages and towns have slated their door-to-door candy collections for Saturday, although Middlebourne and Sistersville are doing it today.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reminds families that COVID-19 is still present and offered some recommendations to enjoy the holiday safely.

The virus is less likely to spread outdoors than in poorly ventilated indoor spaces, the group says at www.healthychildren.org.

“Keeping a safe distance from others outside your household is another good way to reduce risk,” it said. “Make sure your children know to avoid large groups of kids clustering at doorsteps or anywhere else the goodies are being handed out.”

People handing out treats might consider sitting outside or lining up individually pre-packaged treats for kids to take.

If kids do attend indoor events or activities, the Academy said everyone should wear masks and observe safe physical distancing.

And before digging into their haul at home, kids — and parents — should wash their hands.
