Barge incident under probe

Authorities are at a barge on the Ohio River for what Pleasants County Sheriff Chuck Mankins called “a self-manufatured bomb.”

The device has been dismantled, he said.

The site is near the Pleasants and Tyler counties line.

Mankins said the explosive was spotted by Willow Island Locks and Dam personnel around 2 a.m. The barge was going north.

Local authorities were notified around 8 a.m.

This photo was taken at Davis Nurseries on W.Va. 2 near the barge.

Law enforcement from several counties was on scene including the FBI and a bomb squad from the West Virginia State Police.

The U.S. Coast Guard said a safety zone was established from mile markers 141-145 where no river traffic is permitted.
