Always Faithful: Marine Corps League recognizes Kirby
WINFIELD — Scott Kirby, a local veteran of the United States Marine Corps, was awarded National Marine Corps League Marine of the Year at the fall quarterly meeting Sept. 18 in Winfield, W.Va.
Kirby is a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1087 and has been for 15 years.
Over the past 15 years he has served as the Detachment Commandant, State Commandant and now serves as the chaplain for the Mid-East Division.
This is the second time the award has gone to a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1087 with Mike McClain having been honored in 2017.
Kirby enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 5, 1990, after graduating from Parkersburg High School. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, S.C.
Kirby went on to serve for 18 years, with two Mediterranean deployments to Somalia, Bosnia and Desert Storm. While serving, he spent time as a Marine recruiter and was discharged in November 2007.
Today, Kirby and his wife Shawn live in Waverly and have two daughters: Trisia who lives in Grafton and Emma who is still at home.
Kirby now works at the U.S. Bureau of Fiscal Services.
