MARIETTA — Almost to the day after the Women of the World’s vocal performance was canceled due to COVID-19, the group will visit the Marietta College campus next week.

The ensemble consists of four vocalists and a percussionist, representing France, Japan, South Africa, Mexico and Italy, said Marshall C. Kimball, retired professor of music.

“They actually sing in 36 different languages, which blows my mind,” Kimball said.

The ensemble will be on campus Monday and Tuesday.

Marietta College officials stated the group was formed to bring women musicians from across the globe onto a common platform to collaborate and create through the sharing of music.

They also explore and celebrate the differences in ideologies and cultural tenets that exist in the daily lives of women all over the world. The vocalists will entertain with a variety of music representing various countries and cultures, officials said.

The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Monday with a presentation on a variety of issues including diversity and inclusion, ethnic differences and challenges, miscellaneous languages, tolerance, respect, racial prejudices and joy and inclusion that can be created through the music of various cultures.

The presentation is available through Zoom and registration can be done through a link on the college’s website at https://www.marietta.edu/article/women-of-the-world-2021.

There is a limit of 100 participants for the presentation.

The ensemble will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials noted the in-person attendance is available only to Marietta College faculty, students and staff, however it will be livestreamed on the YouTube channel of the Marietta College Music Department.

Kimball noted the college got an extension from the National Endowment for the Arts until May to complete the grant.

“The music department has another request into the NEA so we want to make sure this is completed so we can request the other,” Kimball said.

He explained this is a cross-campus project, with funding coming mostly from the NEA, along with funding from the Marietta College Music Department, the Modern Languages Department, the Asian Studies Program, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Noto Family Fund for Diversity in the Arts.

It was partially funded by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion as “we’re seeing problems all over the U.S.”, Kimball said.
