PARKERSBURG — A local veterans group is looking for the people responsible for damaging the new driveway and parking lot at its headquarters.

Commander Paul DeBerry of Disabled American Veterans Wood County Chapter 32 discovered the damage Wednesday morning at the post on Little Stillwell Road off Murphytown Road. He had a few choice words and phrases which should not be used in the newspaper.

“That’s right,” he said.

The chapter is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators, DeBerry said. The amount of the reward will increase if additional donations are received, he said.

Someone in a vehicle apparently attempted doughnuts and spin outs on the driveway and parking lot, he said. DeBerry can’t tell if it was a truck or a car.

At a cost of $10,000, the asphalt was only recently applied several months ago and has yet to sufficiently harden, DeBerry said.

“It’s still not completely cured,” he said.

The vandalism was reported to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, which dispatched a deputy to investigate. DeBerry believes the incident occurred several days ago after the big snow on Christmas.

Gravel has been ground into the surface of the driveway, among other scars caused by the tires. DeBerry estimated damages between $1,000 and $1,500.

“I don’t know how much the damage is, but it’s all over,” DeBerry said.
