PARKERSBURG — The YMCA of Parkersburg will hold a two-day pickleball tournament Oct. 10-11.

Players of all skill levels will have the opportunity to support a good cause while participating in men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles.

Pickleball is a paddleball sport that’s grown in popularity across the Mid-Ohio Valley. The game integrates components of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Teams of two or four players use wood or composite material paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net. The rules share racquet sport similarities.

“Pickleball is known as the YMCA of Parkersburg’s fastest-growing sports program,” says Jeff Olson, CEO of the YMCA of Parkersburg. “During the colder seasons, it’s common to see our gymnasium full of enthusiastic Pickleball players building friendships and enjoying the game.”

The two-day Pickleball Tournament welcomes players ages 15 and older of any skill level. A $20 entry fee encompasses all tournament events.

Men’s doubles will be featured 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 10 followed by women’s doubles from 1-5 p.m. Mixed doubles will be held from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 11.

Winners of each division will receive gold, silver, or bronze medals. Complimentary water and prepackaged snacks will be provided.

Adequate social distancing practices are applied to Pickleball. However, the YMCA of Parkersburg is taking additional safety precautions by implementing the following COVID-19 protocol during the tournament:

* Temperature checks of all competitors and sideline fans.

* Sanitization of equipment and courts between sessions.

* Accessible hand sanitizer stations within all courts and main areas.

* Social distanced seating spaces for players, guests, and staff members.

* Small division sizes of eight teams.

All tournament proceeds will fund the YMCA of Parkersburg’s continuation of youth development programming during the pandemic. These programs include After-school Out-of-School Care, Toddler Care and teen development programs.

To register for the Pickleball Tournament, call the YMCA at 304-485-5585, visit the facility during standard operating hours or go to www.parkersburgymca.org. For additional information, contact Program Director Criss Welshans at 304-485-5585 ext. 223.
