YMCA of Parkersburg expands day camp
PARKERSBURG — The YMCA of Parkersburg is expanding its summer day camp with a new program, Club-Ed: Back to School, to prepare children for the upcoming start of school.
Emphasis will be placed on helping children become accustomed to a classroom environment. All Club-Ed: Back to School activities and lessons will involve curriculum from the Wood County Board of Education.
Trained counselors and licensed teachers will care for the children in a safe and fun environment. Similar to summer day camp, recreational and athletic activities will be offered.
“A high priority for us at the YMCA of Parkersburg is making sure our children are ready to return to school on Sept. 8,” Jeff Olson, CEO of the YMCA of Parkersburg, said. “With the pandemic shorting children nearly half a year of schooling and local schools pushing back their start date, we couldn’t wait any longer. We wanted to help children re-acclimate to an academic environment. That’s why the YMCA’s Club-Ed: Back to School program is so important and timely.”
To ensure a healthy and safe environment, all recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control recommendations and Gov. Jim Justice’s mask order will be implemented. This includes thorough disinfecting of the facility and equipment, practicing social distancing by maintaining small group sizes, staff wearing masks at all times and encouraging children to wear masks when proper social distancing isn’t possible.
Children will be permitted to be mask-free during any physical activity like running, swimming or playing where social distancing can be followed.
Club-Ed: Back to School ends Sept. 4 and is held weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the YMCA of Parkersburg. Children who are in kindergarten through 6th Grade are eligible to participate.
The daily rate is $25 for Y Members with family memberships and $30 for all others. This gives parents the flexibility of selecting the days and times they prefer to send their children to Club-Ed: Back to School.
To ensure children have the chance to experience Club-Ed: Back to School, the YMCA of Parkersburg offers financial assistance to those in need. People interested in helping children enjoy this educational program can donate by making a check of any amount payable to the YMCA of Parkersburg. Mail checks to 1800 30th St., Parkersburg, WV 26104.
