Stuart’s Opera House to hold open house
NELSONVILLE — Stuart’s Opera House in Athens County will hold an open house 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
The event is free and open to everyone. People are invited to tour the historic Stuart’s Opera House to see newly renovated spaces for weddings, conferences, meetings or private parties.
The venue in Nelsonville at 52 Public Square is a combination of modern amenities in a historic setting.
The Grand Lobby, which seats 240 people, features hardwood floors, a custom-built bar and windows for natural light.
The Opera House, where internationally acclaimed artists have performed, seats 395. These spaces are available to tour and rent.
Stuart’s Opera House is the cornerstone of the Nelsonville Historic Art District. The restored theater reflects its glory days in 1879 through 1924 when it was home to vaudeville and other shows.
Stuart’s closed and sat empty from 1924 through 1976. In 1977 a group formed a non-profit and started bringing the theater back to life when a fire nearly destroyed the building in 1980, the website states.
Seventeen years later, in 1997, the opera house re-opened its doors and is once again home to local, regional, national and internationally acclaimed performances. Stuart’s Opera House now hosts over 75 events each year.
