First Lutheran Church to light up season with candlelight services
PARKERSBURG — First Lutheran Church, 1701 19th St. in Parkersburg, invites everyone to the traditional Candlelight Christmas Eve services on Dec. 24.
These candlelight services will include an early service at 5:30 p.m. and traditional late service beginning at 11 p.m.
Both of these candlelight services include the traditional Christmas hymns. Everyone receives a candle to light and join in singing “Silent Night,” which, as is tradition, concludes each service.
The early service with special music begins at 5:15 p.m.. The late service has special music beginning at 10:30 p.m. Both services will feature the Festival Choir, under the direction of Sr. Choir Director Shandra Ice. Many guest vocalists will be joining the Festival Choir for these celebratory services. First Lutheran organist Sherry Fosselmen will be featured as well.
The Eastlawn Brass Quintet will make its annual appearance. The ensemble will be joined by Travis Hunt and Jake Hunt, percussionists.
Two vocal trios will be featured. Shandra Ice, Jocelyne Gum and Paul Freeman will be accompanied by Carolyn Anderson on piano. The Festival Choir will sing the Franz Biebl “Ave Maria” and will feature the vocal trio of Shandra Ice, Amanda Goodfellow and Shirley Goodfellow.
Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services.
As is tradition, red and white poinsettias given in honor and remembrance of members, friends and relatives will decorate the church. Worshippers will be surrounded by candlelight and seasonal greenery.
“Everyone is cordially invited to come and hear the good news, experience the excitement, and share in the wonder of this Holy season… the night of our Savior’s birth, as we celebrate the true meaning of this glorious night,” First Lutheran said.
First Lutheran Church is handicapped accessible and has the hearing assistance “LOOP” system. A nursery will be available during the early service.
