Tom Phillips to be honored at YMCA community dinner

VIENNA — Tom Phillips will be recognized as the 2019 Heart of Our Community Award winner at the YMCA of Parkersburg’s community dinner from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Grand Pointe Conference and Reception Center in Vienna.
West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey will be the keynote speaker.
Phillips, a graduate of The Ohio State University, has been a swimming coach for over 40 years. He is the YMCA of Parkersburg’s Sharks Swimming Team head coach, emeritus. He is a retired chemist for DuPont.
Mazey is in his eighth season at West Virginia University after guiding the team to unprecedented heights in his first seven years in Morgantown, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017, hosting an NCAA Regional in 2019 and four consecutive Big 12 Championship semifinal appearances, according to the WVU baseball website.
In 2019, Mazey was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year and ABCA East Regional Coach of the Year after guiding the Mountaineers to a 38-win campaign.
Throughout Tuesday’s event, raffles, a silent auction and live auction will occur on items worth $100 and more, said the YMCA of Parkersburg. Items include a golf basket sponsored by United Bank, a gift card from Jimmy Colombo’s Italian Restaurant, a gas grill sponsored by Warner Kia, a Ryobi Battery Drill Set sponsored by Home Depot, a gift set sponsored by Hornor and Harrison, and more.
A sponsor reception begins at 6 p.m. The dinner and program begins at 6:30 p.m.
