Nominations being accepted for Outstanding Young West Virginian

PARKERSBURG — Nominations are being accepted for the 2020 West Virginia Jaycees Outstanding Young West Virginian award, Junior Chamber State President Eureka Ellison said.

The program identifies and awards young people in West Virginia who have distinguished themselves in their careers or through community service, Ellison said.

“The mission of the West Virginia Junior Chamber, also known as Jaycees, is to promote leadership development and community engagement among young people,” Ellison said. “This prestigious annual award serves to recognize individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who exemplify the best attributes of the state’s young active citizens through service or professional achievement.”

Honorees selected in past years have come from all human endeavors with a special emphasis on volunteerism and community service.

Among the recipients in recent years were Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. of Logan, “America’s Got Talent” winner, honored for professional achievement and for raising over $1 million for charities in West Virginia, and Grace Pritt of Hurricane, recognized for humanitarianism and volunteerism, which included a year-long trip to the Philippines, Swaziland and Nicaragua to help people in need.

Up to three individuals will be recognized at a banquet on Feb. 8 in Wheeling.

Recipients at the state level are automatically nominated for the U.S. Junior Chamber Ten Outstanding Young Americans award, a nationally known recognition program in existence since 1939. In 2014, Murphy went on to receive the national award at a ceremony in Baltimore.

Nominations are received in 10 categories: business, economic or entrepreneurial accomplishment; political, legal or governmental affairs; academic leadership or accomplishment; cultural achievement; moral or environmental leadership; contribution to children, world peace or human rights; humanitarian, voluntarism, scientific or technological development; personal improvement or accomplishment; and medical innovation.

Nominations are due by Dec. 2. For more information and nomination instructions, go to OYWVaward.org or call 304-312-6645.
