Parkersburg-area exhibit ‘Bow Wow Meow’ seeks artists

PARKERSBURG — If you live within 100 miles of Parkersburg, you are invited to enter up to three pieces of your artwork in the 2019 Regional Exhibit “Bow, WOW Meow” at the Parkersburg Art Center.

“You can paint your pooch. Craft your cat in clay. Immortalize your fur baby in any artistic medium you like,” said Abby Hayhurst, artistic director for the Parkersburg Art Center. “Bring your entries to the Art Center on July 12 or 13 between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with the entry fee. Fill out an information tag and you are ready to go. It’s pretty simple.”

Artwork does not have to stick with the “Bow WOW Meow” theme; it is just a suggestion. One thing is certain, Hayhurst said, no copies or kits will be displayed and pieces must have been completed within the past four years.

The entry fee for Parkersburg Art Center members is $15 for the first work and $10 for additional entries. For non-members the cost is $20 for the first work and $15 for additional entries.

The amounts of the cash awards made to artists will be determined by the entry fees collected so your fee goes right back into the art community, Hayhurst said. Sales from the show are encouraged and artists retain 70% of their sale price.

“This show is so cool because anyone 18 and older can see their work on the walls in our gallery. The exhibit opening on July 28 is a great opportunity for local artists to meet one another and see what other people in the community are making,” said Jessie Siefert, managing director of the PAC. “Thanks to our exhibit sponsor, United Bank, we are sure to have some great prizes, very good snacks and some other fun happening in conjunction with this opening.”

The exhibit will be judged by Alison Help, director of the WVU School of Art and Design. An opening reception and awards presentation will be on Sunday, July 28 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. This reception is free for the artist and one guest. Art Center members are always admitted free as are children under 12. Additional guests are $10 per person.

The Parkersburg Art Center is located at the corner of Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg. Open hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturday.
