Free Movies in the Park series starts tonight

PARKERSBURG — A free showing of “The Lego Movie 2” will be offered this evening at Quincy Park as part of the third annual Movies in the Park summer series organized by the Wood County Family Resource Network and Friends of Parkersburg’s Parks.

Three movies will be shown at no charge in three parks during the summer. Shows begin around dusk, with families able to set up blankets or chairs around 8 p.m. Music and kids’ activities will be available before each film starts and door prizes after they end.

“Our goal is to provide free and safe activities for local families and to also highlight our area’s parks and the resources we have for recreation right in our own backyards,” said Ashley Way-Fankhauser, executive director of the Wood County Family Resource Network. “We tried to host one in every neighborhood, and we hope to see the events bring together neighbors and new friends.”

“It’s a way of giving back to improve our community’s quality of life by providing free events in the parks,” said Christi Walcutt, a member of the Friends of Parkersburg’s Parks volunteer group. “It also increases our park usage.”

Coming up on the schedule are “Incredibles 2” on July 12 at Southwood Park and “Wonder Park” Aug. 9 at City Park.

Other supporters with financial and in-kind contributions include the UniCare Health Plan of West Virginia, the Junior League of Parkersburg, the City of Parkersburg and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 968/West Virginia-Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association.
