Most Wood County Relay activities postponed due to weather
PARKERSBURG — Most of the events for the Wood County Relay for Life at City Park have been postponed until Saturday afternoon and evening due to concerns over the weather.
“It’s not an easy decision but the safety of everyone in attendance is No. 1 priority,” said Carmen Hathaway, senior community development manager for the American Cancer Society.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms this evening.
The dinner for cancer survivors and guests is still slated for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today in the City Park Pavilion, with doors opening for variety bingo at 7:30 p.m. and games starting at 8.
The majority of the Relay has been moved to Saturday, with the following schedule:
* 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Relay teams can set up
* 3 p.m. — Car show
* 4 — Opening ceremonies
* 4:30 — Cancer survivor laps
* 5 — Teams selling food, raffles, youth activities, Professor Bubble Maker, Walking the Track and more
* 8:30 — Luminaria ceremony
* 9 — Closing
Hathaway referred participants to the RelayforLifeWoodCountyParkersburgWV Facebook page for additional updates.
No schedule changes have been made to the Washington County Relay for Life, also scheduled for today and Saturday at Civitan Park in Belpre, according to Tracy Barnhouse with the Washington County event.
“We’re still on for tonight,” she said.
