PARKERSBURG — Whatever, What-ever, What-ev-er (teenager eye roll). Whatever has as many meanings as it has different ways to pronounce it.

“Whatever,” says Jake Eddy as he paces around his grandparents’ kitchen while he scrolls through his phone searching for a picture. “Whatever is the name of the project. ‘Whatever’ is the title,” he said. “I’m walking around thinking about a title and then was asked about a title. It’s like ‘Whatever’ and I thought ‘Whatever’ pretty much describes it. It’s not one style of music, it’s ‘Whatever.’

“It’s not of any genre, it’s just music,” he said. It’s original material Eddy wrote and produced.

‘Whatever’ is a new concept, according to Eddy. The project will be released in three parts. The first part of the project was released Aug. 2. The first single “Never Too Late” was released June 26.

The number of streams/purchases was over 20,000 by Aug. 2. “That means the numbers are really good,” Eddy smiled and raised his eyebrows three times, bouncing his glasses with each lift.

The chorus of ‘Never Too Late’ says “it’s never too late. It’s never too late to learn to love again. But we try, and we try, and we try so hard.”

“It’s just about lost love and being able to find a new one,” said Eddy. “Whether it be a break-up, divorce, whatever. I want people to interpret it to fit their personal life.”

The “Whatever, part one” can be found on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, GooglePlay, Amazon, Tidal, YouTube and Microsoft Groove.

“Part 2 will be released within a month,” he said. “Part 3 will be before the new year.” He added the number of songs within the three-part project will be 10-12. The reason for the three-part release? Eddy said it was to keep “the millennials and the younger listeners interested. The younger listeners listen to a new album for a week and ditch it typically.

“If you release a project a few songs at a time, it keeps people interested. It’s a relatively new strategy doing a project this way,” he said. “We’re releasing more music, more often in a way to keep the fan base interested.”

As much as part 1 featured two musical tracks, part 2 will feature a track titled “Lonely.” It will feature the hip-hop artists Goon Garcons and GOLD.

“Garcons is an affiliate of G.O.O.D. music,” said Eddy. “G.O.O.D. is a Grammy Award winning record label founded by Kanye West. I’m friends with GOLD, who is a hip-hop artist from Miami. He is a mutual friend and they are on the track together.

“Right before ‘Lonely’ there is a spoken speech,” said Eddy. “It’s a sample of a speech from a guy named Will Wright. It’s from “Tedx Talks” speech “Loneliness is Literally Killing Us.” Those 35 seconds are the introduction to ‘Lonely.’ You need to listen to the 35 seconds to understand ‘Lonely.’ But to understand the project, you will need to listen to all three releases in order.”

Eddy said there will be an actual physical CD “when all three parts are out and there will probably be a video from “Lonely.”

The senior at Parkersburg South High School said the project “just totally happened. I had been writing and looked back through the material. I was just making music and just listening to it. I thought people would like it.”

But first, he had to run it past a few friends. “Those type of friends who will tell you the truth, even if you don’t want to hear it,” he said. “I’ve got a network of about 20 friends. I sent this to all of them and asked their opinion. They’ll tell me whether they like it or if they think it stinks. That’s why I trust their opinion.”
