Ohio Valley Summer Theater selects 2017 show
ATHENS — The Ohio Valley Summer Theater will present “Hairspray” for its 2017 summer musical July 20-Aug. 6 at the Ohio University Forum Theater.
Auditions will be April 8 and 9 with workshops, community meetings and other events also being planned.
“Hairspray,” presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, takes the audience back to the 1960s with bouffant hair, laughter and romance. “Hairspray” was written by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman.
“Ohio Valley Summer Theater is honored to present a show that challenges all of us to consider important social issues including racism, sexism and body image, bullying, and stereotypes,” said Christi Camper Moore, the theater’s executive and artistic director. “We are thrilled that this show will cast a large, diverse ensemble — including a featured middle school ensemble — to tell the timeless story of the value of inclusion, compassion, and community.”
“Hairspray” is set in 1962 in Baltimore and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire, to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star.
She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network, all without denting her hairdo.
The show won eight Tony awards including Best Musical.
The Ohio Valley production will be directed by Kindra Steenerson and the musical director is Kelly Burns. Moore is the choreographer.
